Derbyshire retain their Midlands Schools Title

Derbyshire fielded a 7 strong team, five boys and two girls, in the Midland Schools’ Championships at a windy and difficult Collingtree Park in Northamptonshire on Thursday last.

All had qualified through their performances in the Derbyshire Schools Championships a month ago at Chevin. The team of Adam Gentles, Luca Abraham, Kian Moran, Charlie Burnham, Jamie Hunt, Chloe Searson-Best and Gabby Auld stood up to the test superbly. As a team, they lay in 3rd place after the morning round, 7 behind Leicestershire and 6 adrift of Warwickshire.

They came out fighting in the afternoon though, and played some fantastic golf. Luca scored a best of the day 72 to emerge as Midlands Schools’ Champion, beating Fynn Colley of Leicestershire by a stroke, and both Charlie in 4th and Jamie in 5th supported superbly, all 3 comfortably making the top 8 to qualify for the English Schools’ Finals at Woodhall Spa in three weeks’ time. Chloe had a great afternoon round too, with a best of the day for the girls 74, shooting her up to 3rd place. Gabby narrowly missed qualification, finishing joint 5th when only four girls qualify. It was really hard luck, though she may yet get into the National Final.

Their collective contributions, together with those of Kian and Adam, saw Derbyshire overhaul both Leicestershire and Warwickshire to climb up to 1st place for the 3rd year running, beating Leicestershire by 4 strokes.
